Cableguys TimeStop Review: The Ultimate Plugin for Perfect Tape‑Stops
Now’s your chance to add a classic tape-stop or vinyl spin-down to a track, avoiding how frustrating the traditional workflow can be. Unlike other methods there is no need to hope the plugin triggers at the right millisecond, and then spend ten minutes fixing timing mismatches so it actually fits your project.
Cableguys, known for their impressive plugin ShaperBox —have finally solved this problem with their plugin, TimeStop.
Instead of relying on clunky sliders, TimeStop lets you draw your slowdowns directly as DAW automation. Here is a deep dive into why this little tool is a must-have for your production arsenal.
What is Cableguys TimeStop?
At its core, TimeStop is an intuitive audio effect designed to create instant, creative tape-stops, drops, and fills. It is incredibly versatile and can be dropped onto literally any audio source:
Master Bus: Pull off massive, arrangement-wide pauses.
Vocals: Create dramatic transitions before a chorus.
Drums & Synths: Inject instant energy into dull loops.
The Secret Weapon: 3 Unique Timing Modes
| Mode | How it Works | Best Used For |
|---|---|---|
| Classic | That famous woozy tape drag. Pitch and time drop as one, like vinyl slowing to a standstill. | Lo-Fi beats, classic hip-hop transitions, and organic acoustic drops. |
| Modern | A first for tape-stop plugins: drop pitch without slowing the beat. | Keeping vocal lyrics and heavy drums perfectly tight in modern pop and trap. |
| Loop | Tape-stop meets stutter. Get DJ-style fills and transitions that would take ages to do by hand. | EDM build-ups, glitch effects, and high-energy transitions. |
How It Works (In 3 Simple Steps)
You do not need to be an audio engineer to get great results from TimeStop. The workflow is incredibly straightforward:
- Drop it on a track: Load the plugin onto any channel, bus, or your master track.
- Draw your shape: Open up your DAW’s automation lane for TimeStop’s Pitch knob. Draw the exact curve, length, and shape you want.
- Choose your flavor: Flip between Classic, Modern, or Loop to find the perfect vibe for your track.
System Compatibility
TimeStop fits seamlessly into almost any modern production environment. It runs on both Windows (7, 8, 10, or 11) and Mac (OS X 10.15 or later, including native Apple Silicon support). [1, 2]
It supports VST 3, AU, and AAX formats, meaning it works flawlessly in Ableton Live, Logic Pro, FL Studio, Cubase, Pro Tools, and more.
